Missed Freight Delivery Appointment NYC: Cross-Dock, Storage and Redelivery Solutions
A missed freight delivery appointment in New York can quickly become an expensive problem. The driver may be turned away, the receiver may not have another available appointment for several days, and the trucking company may begin charging detention, layover or redelivery fees.
The situation can become even more difficult when the driver is operating a tractor-trailer and has nowhere nearby to safely unload or store the freight.
MO Trucking Inc. provides cross-dock, temporary warehouse storage and freight redelivery services from our Bay Shore, New York facility. We can receive the freight from the original carrier, hold it temporarily and complete the final delivery using the proper equipment.
Our team assists freight brokers, trucking companies, manufacturers, importers, trade-show exhibitors and other businesses that need a fast solution for stranded or rejected freight in the New York metropolitan area.
What Happens When a Freight Delivery Appointment Is Missed?
Many warehouses, distribution centers, construction sites, retailers and event venues require scheduled delivery appointments. When a truck arrives late, arrives on the wrong date or arrives without a confirmed appointment, the receiver may refuse to unload the freight.
The original carrier may then have several problems:
- The driver needs to continue to another pickup or delivery.
- The receiver may not offer another appointment for several days.
- The driver may be close to reaching the legal driving-hours limit.
- The trailer may be needed for another shipment.
- The carrier may not have a nearby terminal or warehouse.
- The freight may require a smaller truck or liftgate for redelivery.
- Detention and layover charges may continue to increase.
Instead of leaving the freight on the original trailer, MO Trucking Inc. may be able to unload it at our cross-dock warehouse and complete the delivery at a later date.
Common Reasons Freight Is Rejected
A receiver may refuse a shipment for several reasons. Some problems involve the appointment, while others involve the freight, equipment or delivery location.
Common reasons include:
- The driver missed the scheduled appointment.
- The receiver does not show an appointment in its system.
- The driver arrived outside the permitted delivery window.
- The receiving department is closed.
- The delivery address is incorrect.
- The shipment requires a liftgate.
- The location does not have a loading dock.
- The tractor-trailer cannot access the delivery location.
- The receiver requires a smaller straight truck.
- The freight shifted during transportation.
- Pallets are leaning, broken or damaged.
- The receiver needs the freight sorted by purchase order.
- The shipment contains extra or incorrect products.
- The consignee refuses the freight because of visible damage.
- The trade-show venue is not ready to accept the shipment.
When these situations happen, the original carrier often needs a local warehouse and delivery partner that can respond quickly.
How MO Trucking Inc. Can Help
When a driver experiences a Missed Freight Delivery Appointment NYC, our Bay Shore cross-dock may provide an alternative to holding the driver and trailer for several days.
Depending on the shipment, we may be able to provide the following services.
Cross-Dock and Freight Transfer
The original truck can bring the shipment to our warehouse at:
MO Trucking Inc.
140 South 4th Street
Bay Shore, NY 11706
Our 20,000-square-foot cross-dock facility has 40 loading-bay doors and was previously operated as a UPS Freight and TForce Freight terminal.
We can unload palletized freight from the original trailer and hold it for redelivery. This allows the original driver and equipment to leave instead of waiting for another delivery appointment.
Cross-dock service may also be used to transfer the freight directly from the original truck into one of our delivery vehicles.
Short-Term Warehouse Storage
When the new delivery appointment is not available immediately, we may be able to temporarily store the freight inside our warehouse.
Short-term storage is commonly needed when:
- The next appointment is several days away.
- A receiver is closed for the weekend.
- A construction site is not ready.
- A trade show has not started accepting freight.
- The customer is waiting for delivery instructions.
- Freight needs to be inspected before redelivery.
- A smaller delivery vehicle must be scheduled.
Storage charges are based on the number of pallets, the amount of warehouse space required and the length of time the freight remains at our facility.
Freight Redelivery
Once the receiver confirms a new appointment, MO Trucking Inc. can complete the final delivery.
Our local equipment includes:
- 26-foot straight trucks with liftgates
- Day-cab tractors
- 48-foot trailers
- 48-foot trailers with liftgates
- 53-foot trailers
- 53-foot trailers with liftgates
- Pallet jacks
- Electric pallet jacks
The correct equipment depends on the freight dimensions, weight, delivery location and unloading requirements.
Liftgate Delivery
Many refused deliveries happen because the original carrier arrives with a dry van trailer but the receiver does not have a loading dock.
MO Trucking Inc. operates straight trucks and trailers equipped with liftgates. We can transfer the freight at our warehouse and complete the delivery using equipment that can lower palletized freight to street or sidewalk level.
Standard liftgate service is delivery to the street or sidewalk only. It does not include walk-in service, inside delivery, unpacking, skid removal or garbage removal unless these services are quoted separately.
Straight-Truck Delivery in New York City
Some locations in Manhattan, Brooklyn, Queens, the Bronx and other congested areas cannot accommodate a full-size tractor-trailer.
In these cases, the freight may need to be transferred into a 26-foot straight truck.
Straight trucks can be a better option for:
- Narrow streets
- Retail stores
- Hotels
- Office buildings
- Restaurants
- Residential locations
- Construction sites
- Trade-show venues
- Locations without tractor-trailer access
Before scheduling, we need the pallet count, dimensions, weight and delivery requirements to confirm that the freight will fit safely in the selected vehicle.
Freight Restacking and Rework
Sometimes a receiver rejects a shipment because the freight shifted or the pallets are unstable.
Our warehouse team may be able to provide freight-rework services such as:
- Restacking leaning pallets
- Replacing damaged pallets
- Adding shrink wrap
- Adding corner protectors
- Rebanding freight
- Separating mixed products
- Sorting freight by purchase order
- Rebuilding collapsed pallets
- Taking photographs of the freight
- Preparing the shipment for redelivery
Freight must be reviewed before we can confirm the available rework service and pricing. Photographs are extremely helpful when pallets have shifted or been damaged.
Trade-Show and Event Freight
Trade-show facilities and event venues frequently enforce strict receiving schedules. A driver who arrives after the designated move-in period may be turned away.
MO Trucking Inc. provides trade-show transportation and advance warehouse services in the New York metropolitan area.
When event freight cannot be delivered, we may be able to:
- Receive it at our Bay Shore warehouse
- Temporarily store it
- Deliver it during the correct move-in period
- Transfer it to a smaller truck
- Provide liftgate service
- Pick it up after the event
- Return it to our warehouse
- Prepare it for outbound transportation
Availability depends on the event schedule, freight size and equipment requirements.
Information We Need to Help
For the fastest response, please provide as much information as possible.
We normally need:
- Current location of the truck
- Original pickup location
- Delivery address
- Requested redelivery date
- Available delivery window
- Receiver contact information
- Number of pallets or pieces
- Dimensions of each pallet
- Total shipment weight
- Commodity description
- Photographs of the freight
- Whether the pallets are stackable
- Whether any freight is damaged
- Whether the delivery requires a liftgate
- Whether the driver must assist with unloading
- Whether an appointment is required
- Whether inside delivery is required
- Purchase-order or reference numbers
We also need to know whether the original driver can bring the freight to our Bay Shore warehouse or whether a local recovery truck is required.
Avoiding Additional Detention and Layover Charges
When a delivery is rejected, responding quickly can help prevent additional costs.
The original truck may be charging:
- Detention
- Layover
- Truck-ordered-not-used fees
- Redelivery fees
- Trailer-storage charges
- Driver-assist charges
- Additional mileage
- Stop-off charges
Moving the freight into a local cross-dock can release the original carrier and prevent the shipment from remaining on expensive equipment longer than necessary.
The best option depends on the original carrier’s charges, the next available appointment and the cost of cross-docking, storage and local redelivery.
